Excerpt: Boardman House Side view.Floor plans. The Boardman House (circa 1687), also known as the Scotch-Boardman House or the Bennett-Boardman House , is a historic house located at 17 Howard Street, Saugus, Massachusetts . It is a National Historic Landmark .Estimates of the house’s history have varied over the years, but it is currently believed that the house was constructed circa 1687 for William Boardman. The house was built as two rooms per floor, with a central chimney. On the ground floor it has a parlor and hall , with two bedrooms above, and an attic above the bedrooms. By 1696 a characteristic lean-to was added at the rear for the kitchen and milkroom giving it the appearance of a saltbox . There are five fireplaces in the house, one in each of the original rooms, and another in the kitchen.Although the house’s general shape has not changed since this time, its original leaded-glass windows were at some point replaced with more modern sash windows, two original front gables were removed, and in about 1725 a new interior staircase was added. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961. It is owned by Historic New England and open to the public two days per year.References (URLs online) Websites (URLs online) See also (online edition) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The Church of St Elijah (Bulgarian : ) is a late Medieval Bulgarian church in the town of Boboshevo , Kyustendil Province .Location, history, |

Anaerobic biodegradation of ethylene dibromide and 1,2-dichloroethane in the presence of fuel hydrocarbons. $49.99 Field evidence from underground storage tank (UST) sites where leaded gasoline leaked indicates the lead scavengers 1,2-dibromoethane (ethylene dibromide, or EDB) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) may be present in groundwater at levels that pose unacceptable risk. These compounds are seldom tested for at UST sites. Although dehalogenation of EDB and 1,2-DCA is known to occur, the effect of fuel hydrocarbons on their biodegradability under anaerobic conditions is poorly understood. Microcosms (2 L glass bottles) were prepared with soil and groundwater from a UST site in Clemson, South Carolina, using samples collected from the source (containing residual fuel) and less contaminated downgradient areas. Anaerobic biodegradation of EDB occurred in microcosms simulating natural attenuation, but was more extensive and predictable in treatments biostimulated with lactate. In the downgradient biostimulated microcosms, EDB decreased below its maximum contaminant level (MCL) (0.05 mug/L) at a first order rate of 9.4 +/- 0.2 yr-1. The pathway for EDB dehalogenation proceeded mainly by dihaloelimination to ethene in the source microcosms, while sequential hydrogenolysis to bromoethane and ethane was predominant in the downgradient treatments. Biodegradation of EDB in the source microcosms was confirmed by carbon specific isotope analysis, with a delta13C enrichment factor of -5.6‰. The highest levels of EDB removal occurred in microcosms that produced the highest amounts of methane. Extensive biodegradation of benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene and ortho-xylene was also observed in the source and downgradient area microcosms. In contrast, biodegradation of 1,2-DCA proceeded at a considerably slower rate than EDB, with no response to lactate additions. The slower biodegradation rates for 1,2-DCA agree with field observations and indicate that even if EDB is removed to below its MCL, 1,2-DCA may persist.;Separate experiments were carried out to assess the potential inhibitory |

Clara and Mr. Tiffany $11.99 Against the unforgettable backdrop of New York near the turn of the twentieth century, from the Gilded Age world of formal balls and opera to the immigrant poverty of the Lower East Side, bestselling author Susan Vreeland again breathes life into a work of art in this extraordinary novel, which brings a woman once lost in the shadows into vivid color. It’s 1893, and at the Chicago World’s Fair, Louis Comfort Tiffany makes his debut with a luminous exhibition of innovative stained-glass windows, which he hopes will honor his family business and earn him a place on the international artistic stage. But behind the scenes in his New York studio is the freethinking Clara Driscoll, head of his women’s division. Publicly unrecognized by Tiffany, Clara conceives of and designs nearly all of the iconic leaded-glass lamps for which he is long remembered.Clara struggles with her desire for artistic recognition and the seemingly insurmountable challenges that she faces as a professional woman, which ultimately force her to protest against the company she has worked so hard to cultivate. She also yearns for love and companionship, and is devoted in different ways to five men, including Tiffany, who enforces to a strict policy: he does not hire married women, and any who do marry while under his employ must resign immediately. Eventually, like many women, Clara must decide what makes her happiest—the professional world of her hands or the personal world of her heart. |

Diamond Simulant $59 The high price of gem-grade diamonds has created a large demand for materials with similar gemological characteristics, known as diamond simulants or imitations. Simulants are distinct from synthetic diamond, which unlike simulants is actual diamond, and therefore has the same material properties as natural diamond. Enhanced diamonds are also excluded from this definition. A diamond simulant may be artificial, natural, or in some cases a combination thereof. While their material properties depart markedly from those of diamond, simulants have certain desired characteristics-such as dispersion and hardness-which lend themselves to imitation. Trained gemologists with appropriate equipment are able to distinguish natural and synthetic diamonds from all diamond simulants, primarily by visual inspection. The most common diamond simulants are high-leaded glass (i.e., rhinestones) and cubic zirconia (CZ), both artificial materials. A number of other artificial materials, such as strontium titanate and synthetic rutile have been developed since the mid 1950s, but these are no longer in common use. |

Excerpt: The Grue Church fire happened in Grue, Norway on 26 May 1822 and took the lives of between 113 and 117 churchgoers. It is the biggest fire disaster in the history of Norway. The old Grue Church was located close to Skulstad, north-west of Kirkenær in Solør. The oldest section of the church stemmed from the 13th century and was built using the stave method. The church was rebuilt around 1600 with the addition of two transepts built with round, hand-worked, logs and one tall central tower. Above the nave and the two transepts there were wide galleries, allowing the church to house 600-700 people. Both the nave and the transepts had entrance doors which swung inwards. When in open position they also blocked the entrance door to the galleries. The leaded frame stained glass windows were placed high up on the wall and were covered by an iron grid on the outside. The exterior of the church was covered with pine tar. Calculations that were later done estimated that 17 tons of tar had been applied between 1600 and 1822. On Pentecost the church was filled to capacity. It was a bright and hot day early in the summer. In the middle of the sermon that was preached by the vicar, Iver Hesselberg, a fire broke out on the outer wall of the southern transept, and soon the fire broke in. Within 10-15 minutes the church was completely engulfed and soon burnt to the ground. Evacuation was hampered by the way in which the doors had been constructed, and a panic arose inside the church where everyone fought each other to escape. The official death count is 113, however the figures 116 and 117 are also mentioned. Among the people who were incinerated there were a mere 7 adult men. At least 45 of the fatalities were children under 16 years. Many were trapped in th… More: |
